back to life, back to reality

definitely don't have a bog eye
well my time off is over and don't i fucking know it. waking up was crippling, leaving the house was brutal, actually being in work was pretty sweet because i missed it but i'm home and i feel rank. proper poorly little puppy i am right now, wrapped up all toasty because WINTER IS HERE which is one good thing i can take from today. also, massive shout out to my nursery babes for being so wonderful today (and all the time) making me feel loved and welcomed back into the warm prison that is adult life.

i don't really have any anecdotes from today because i'm being well behaved but i started a new book:
"what the fuck are you reading?"

more chuck because "snuff" left me a bit disappointed. it turned out to be pretty tasteless in the end. i admire his cynical (maybe nihilistic) approach to social commentary but it just wasn't as good as his other stuff. lots of potential incest, drug rape, gang bangs, murder plans, pointless conversation and unrealistic conclusions. it feels like he tried to out-disgust himself after a few good books that centred around being controversial: shot himself in the foot really because i wouldn't recommend it. but we can't be fantastic all the time, can we? i mean look at s club 7 OH SORRY TOO SOON?

all the feels ALL OF THEM
"lullaby" fell from the unread pile into my hands a few days ago. the premise is much more serious but still a little bit silly - there's a poem called the "culling song" which people read to elderly or terminally ill people and it helps them die. turns out, loads of parents have been accidentally reading it to their kids. the book looks at what happens when words really can hurt you after a few questionable people start to realise they can kill people with no questions asked. it's dark, it's interesting, it's clever, it's very good and it's genuine: when palahniuk was younger, his father and step-mum were murdered by a jealous ex-lover and chuck was part of the jury which sentenced the killer to the death sentence - apparently, this book was written so the author could cope with his decision. woah.

MUSIC? music. "what the fuck is that song?"

it's criminal that tegan & sara haven't had a mention on this blog since it started. seeing as they're one of my favourite bands, this is long overdue. one of their best albums (in my humble opinion) is turning ten this year and so they're re-releasing it with fuck tonnes of extras. "so jealous" is an iconic album - it has the lesbian identical twins written all over it: heartbreak, anxiety, confusion, sadness, catharsis, hope, happiness, love, passion, helplessness and so much more. it's sort of poppy, sort of punky, sort of "actual" indie but it's all sorts of good. "take me anywhere" is a personal highlight (as is "wake up exhausted") and, even though "the con" is probably their best album ever, it's this sort of song which makes me continually question my judgement. the girls aren't always polished and they're certainly not to everyone's taste (even though "heartthrob" was one of the best pop albums of last year) but they hold a special kind of sentimentality to me and if you don't like that then you know where the door/close button is (lol jk come back, i'll write about the top 40 tomorrow if you do) xo
